To meet the conditions of our wastewater treatment consent, we are undertaking a comprehensive review of our wastewater treatment process and discharge.
We are reviewing our wastewater treatment processes at the Awatoto Wastewater Treatment Plant, both to fulfil existing discharge consent conditions and to protect the environment and our community. Â
The review focuses on:Â
We are committed to finding solutions that protect the environment and our community, while also making sure we’re spending money wisely. This wastewater treatment review will help us get there, but we need your input.Â
We are seeking to understand more about community expectations for wastewater treatment at the Awatoto Wastewater Treatment Plant in Napier. Â
Wastewater (domestic and industrial/trade waste) is collected from around 93 percent of Napier’s homes and businesses and treated at the Awatoto Wastewater Treatment Plant.  While generally compliant, there are times when the treatment plant does not perform as expected. Read more background information on why we're reviewing our wastewater treatment here.
As part of the Wastewater Treatment Review, we're inviting the community to take a guided tour of Napier’s Awatoto Wastewater Treatment Plant. This is a chance to see first-hand how wastewater is treated through a series of biological processes before it’s safely discharged into the environment.
Each two-hour session includes a tour of the plant, time for questions, and a feedback discussion to support the ongoing Wastewater Treatment Review.
Tours will be held on Tuesday 29 July, 1pm-3pm and Saturday 2 August, 10am-12pm. Tour numbers are limited so get in quick!
We've provided a number of ways for people to have their say on Napier's Wastewater Treatment Review. Feedback closes at 5pm, Sunday 10 August.
